Appropriate labelling of cosmetic products

Cosmetic products are available on the market only if their primary and secondary packaging include the following information in indelible, easily legible and visible lettering:

  •  name or registered name and address of the responsible person; nominal content at the time of packaging by weight or by volume, except for:
  • packaging containing less than five grams or five millilitres;
  • free samples;
  • single application packaging; pre-packed products usually sold as multi-packs, the content does not have to be provided if the number of items is provided on the packaging. This information is not necessary if the number of items can easily be seen through the packaging, or if the product is usually sold individually.

  • Date until which a cosmetic product maintains its original quality if stored under appropriate conditions

The minimum expiry date must be clearly visible and must be composed of a month and a year or a day, a month and a year. If necessary, this information must be supplemented by an indication of the conditions which must be satisfied to guarantee the stated durability.

The indication of a minimum expiry date is not mandatory for cosmetic products whose minimum expiry date is more than 30 months. For such products, an indication of the period of time after opening for which the product can be used without harm to the consumer must be provided.
